Psychologists in academic health centers have special concerns and unique challenges. The Association of Psychologists in Academic Centers (APAHC) was established in 1982 to advocate for academic health center psychologists (teaching hospitals, medical schools, allied health schools, and VA medical centers).  APAHC provides a forum for psychologists who are faculty and/or staff members in academic health centers and other psychologists who support the purpose and mission of the Association.  APAHC is Section VIII of Division 12 (Society of Clinical Psychology) of the American Psychological Association. APAHC is also a member of the Council of Academic Societies of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). APAHC's dual affiliation, with psychology and with medicine, reflects its unique position among the panoply of psychology organizations.

APAHC's purpose is to promote the discipline and profession of psychology in academic health centers and to enhance the participation of psychologists in academic health center governance, research, education and clinical care. APAHC members strive to expand psychology's role and the role of behavioral science in health care research, clinical services, and the education of medical students, graduate students, pre--doctoral psychology interns, postdoctoral fellows, and resident physicians. APAHC supports active leadership roles for psychologists in all aspects of academic health center operation and administration. The Association promotes an equal and collegial role for psychologists with other health care professionals. APAHC is committed to fostering the application of psychological and behavioral science knowledge and technology to the practice of medicine and psychology to the infusion of psychological principles into research, clinical care and teaching programs of academic health centers. APAHC activities are designed to benefit patients, health care trainees, the general public and to also to advance psychology in medical settings.
