SCP ANNOUNCEMENTS

Education and Training Committee
Co-chairs: Scott Serviss and Natalie Monarch

The Education and Training Committee (E&T) is hosting it's second year of Distance Learning (teleconference) seminars.  We met our goal of hosting 4 seminars – 2 Masters Series seminars and 2 Training Modules for transitioning professionals and students.  We have three upcoming seminars:  1)  “Business Literacy for Consulting Psychologists” presented by Dr. Richard Ackley on November 2nd  2) "Developmental Coaching" presented by Dr. Otto Laske on November 18th and 3) “The APA Ethics Code and Consulting Psychology” presented by Drs. Rodney Lowman and Stewart Cooper on December 2nd.  "Developmental Coaching" and "Ethics" are both Masters Series programs.

We have begun and are continuing the process of connecting with senior level consultants to elicit their perspective regarding types of seminars to offer.  We are creating channels of communication between the E&T Committee and related organizations (e.g. SIOP) regarding our Distance Learning initiatives in order to bring related students and professionals into our community.  We are also working on developing more sophisticated online processes for signing up for Distance Learning initiatives – both as presenters and as participants.

Lastly, as part of the Spring 2006 Distance Learning Series, we would like to offer one seminar as a follow-up to a Midwinter program.  We have heard people say "great program, but not enough time to go deeper."  Look out for more information at the Midwinter Conference.

APA 2006 Annual Convention: Call for Programs
2006 Program Co-Chairs: Amy Owen and Tracy Cocivera

The Consulting Psychology Division continues to 'raise the bar' on it's programming at the APA Annual Convention; resulting in a record number of participants at several of our programs this year.  In addition to a rich offering of Individual Sessions, the Division also delivered a packed schedule in the D13 Hospitality Suite.  We plan to continue the trend by putting together an exceptional Division Program for the APA 2006 Annual Convention.

Division 13 2006 Initiatives.  During the coming year, the Consulting Psychology Division will continue focus on three Initiatives:  Leadership, Healthy Workplace and Diversity.  In alignment with these initiatives; our Program Theme at the APA 2006 Annual Convention will be Twenty-first Century Leadership:  Building Frameworks and Understanding.

CALL FOR PROGRAMS:

Please visit  http://APACustomOut.apa.org/ConvCall  for details on program submission, all D13 proposals must be submitted via this website.  The website will guide you through the submission process for individual, symposium or other proposals.  Only Internet Explorer 5.0+, Netscape 7.0+, and Firefox 1.0+ are supported.

Submission Deadline.  Proposals must be received by 11:59pm eastern standard time, Friday, 2 December 2005

When a proposal has been submitted successfully, you will see a screen acknowledging your submission with a proposal ID.  Please print that screen and save the proposal ID for future reference.

Proposals can be for one of the following types of Sessions:

  1. Individual Presentations.  Submissions for individual presentations at the APA convention may be in the form of either individual papers or posters.
  1. Symposia or Panel Discussions.  A symposium or panel discussion is a focused session in which participants present their views about a common theme, issue or question.
  1. Conversation Hours.  A conversation hour is an opportunity for informal discussion and exchange of ideas between the audience and usually one or two presenters.  Presenters are chosen for their expertise in a particular area of interest to members.
  1. Workshops.  A workshop is a 1 to 2 hour program based on teaching direct skills and application of theory to workshop participants.  Workshops combine theoretical and experiential approaches.
  1. Interdivisional Cross-Cutting Programs.  This program should incorporate an innovative approach to a topic that explicitly draws upon perspectives and contributions represented by multiple divisions.  Each division may participate in the development and submission of only one cross-cutting program proposal and each collaborating group may submit only one proposal.  Proposals for Cross-Cutting Programs are due by Friday, October 28, 2005.  Proposals will be evaluated by the Central Programming Working Group of the Board of Convention Affairs.  All proposals must be submitted electronically via email with appropriate attachments to the APA Convention Office, either to Candy Won (cwon@apa.org) or to Mary Anne Dornbusch (mdornbusch@apa.org).

We look forward to hearing from you and working together for another great Division 13 Program in 2006.

APA Council Representative Report
Division 13 Representative: Ann M. O’Roark

The agenda for the August legislative session of APA’s 175 representatives included 44 items. Of the 30 Action/Discussion items, 13 were approved by “consent” during the Pre-Council plenary session on August 16. The APA Commission for the Recognition of Specialties and Proficiencies in Professional Psychology (CRSPPP) submitted renewal motions after full APA reviews were completed for:

  • Biofeedback: Applied Psychophysiology as a Proficiency in Professional Psychology

  • Clinical Child Psychology as a Specialty in Professional Psychology

  • Counseling Psychology as a Specialty in Professional Psychology

  • Clinical Psychology as a Specialty in Professional Psychology

  • Psychoanalysis in Psychology as a Specialty in Professional Psychology

Practitioners in of these recognized areas will likely provide consulting services regarding their topical recognition. If anyone is interested in reviewing the materials submitted for recognition by any of these groups, please contact one of the SCP representatives. It would be appropriate for SCP to review and assure that consulting services are appropriately addressed in such recognitions. SCP can then determine if the group would be a candidate for development of guidelines statements that could stand as corollary documents with the February 19, 2005 policy on “Guidelines for E&T at the Graduate and Postgraduate Levels in Consulting Psychology / Organizational Consulting Psychology.”

Critical numbers: APA’s net worth is $150M; Budget surplus was estimated at $463K [before Katrina and after Tsunami allocations]; and, membership dues will increase by $8 [regular increments linked to consumer index ]. A major shift in the APA financial profile is that 66% of all revenues are now coming from publications, primarily from electronic subscriptions.

  • Policy and Bylaws changes impact SCP as they are the frameworks within which Division Bylaws operate and supercede Division statements.

  • APA finances take a great deal of time in legislative sessions, as COR has fiduciary responsibility for APA revenues, budgets, expenditures, and investments.  SCP Board carries the equivalent fiduciary obligation for the division.

Miscellaneous topics:

Reports from each of the four Presidential Initiatives were “received.” Adopted items:

  • Making Psychology A Household Word

  • Health Care for the Whole Person

  • Enhancing Diversity  [Report to Greg Pennington, Board MAL]

  • Evidence Based Practice [New Business Motion Introduced August 21 re EBP for applied psychology practitioners; APA13 COR with co-sponsors: William Macey, APA 14 COR, and Judith Patterson, NJ COR.  Motion attached.]

Rememberance for APA members deceased February 2005-July 2005 included Warren A Ketcham, recipient of the SCP award for excellence in consulting.
