SCP ANNOUNCEMENTS

Education and Training Committee

Co-chairs: Scott Serviss and Natalie Monarch

The SCP Education and Training Committee focuses on providing educational and professional development opportunities in Consulting Psychology for SCP members and other psychology professionals with an interest in this arena.

We are celebrating the success of the 2005-2006 Distance Learning Series (DL), which offers Consulting Psychology educational/development teleconference seminars to all levels of consultants – from entry level to senior.  In 2005-2006 the DL program had enormous success and netted $6,495.  This success will help SCP to provide additional educational programs for our members and many thanks go to all of our esteemed presenters who make this program possible!

Thank you to Dr. Harry Levinson who is conducting the second series of a Mentoring Teleconference for new consultants.  Over the past year, Dr. Levinson, in partnership with the Education and Training Committee, has graciously provided 2 rounds of a 6-week case study review conference call for “green” consultants.  We greatly appreciate Dr. Levinson’s valuable contribution and also offer many thanks to E&D committee member, Dr. Toral Desai, for her coordinating efforts.

The 2006-2007 Distance Learning Series is underway!

APA Education Leadership Conference: Results for the Society of Consulting Psychology
By Stewart Cooper

The recent APA Education Leadership Conference solicited the involvement of SCP as a Division of APA.  Representatives of about 15 Divisions along with many other groups involved in education and training participated. The conference focused on several topics germane to SCP and several positive outcomes resulted from our being in attendance.

  • Consultation was affirmed as one of six core functional areas to be put in place in the curriculum and training sequence of all professional psychology training programs.  Learning about consultation will be framed developmentally, i.e., entry to pre-practicum, practicum, internship, post-graduation, and lifelong learning.  A document outlining behavioral benchmarks on consultation and the other five core competency areas will be shared with us in the next two to three months for our feedback.  There seemed to be genuine interest in receiving this feedback from us.
  • The conference focused on techniques of assessment targeted towards increasing the formative and summative evaluation activities common to high quality consultation work, in this case focused on education and training.  New technologies for doing this such as web-based and use of in-time electronic responding were presented during the conference.  The concept of Continuous Quality Improvement was used several times as a buzz term for the goals of this enhanced use of assessment.  The central goal is to go to more of a competency model of assessment rather than a activities completed/time put in model.
  • Obtained a tentative commitment from the leader of Division 45, the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues, to consider co-sponsorship of our upcoming midwinter conference given its focus on diversity and multicultural work in organization consultation.
  • Provided support for advocacy efforts to support the GPE funds that provide significant economic stipends to graduate students working with underserved populations, e.g., minorities, the aging, etc. in some type of applied capacity.
