About the SPW/AWP Suite

The SPW/AWP suite serves as a place to hold meetings, network, share, and as a place for suite volunteers from both organizations to stay at a reduced rate. The suite set up consists of a larger main room for meetings, a smaller side room for the book exhibit, and sleeping quarters. SWP and AWP currently share the financial support of the suite equally and each has access to half of the target of 17–20 programming hours. Because it is meant to be a "hospitality suite," the two organizations decided that the remainder of the hours should be designated as "open time" for members to talk, network, relax, and get to know people in the organization. They also decided that the events held in the suite should be primarily conversation hours and meetings of task forces and organizations rather than formal presentations. These are all open sessions—mental health professionals and students are welcome to attend.

Programming at the 2008 SPW/AWP Hospitality Suite

The 2008 SPW/AWP Hospitality Suite will be in the Boston Marriott® Copley Place. Every year the suite hosts a variety of programs of interest to members of AWP and SPW. To submit a proposal, please complete and submit the Program Request Form by JUNE 1, 2008. Requests submitted after this date cannot be honored. Proposals will be prioritized in the order in which they were submitted. Presenters will be notified of their presentation times by June 15th. Shortly thereafter, the schedule will be posted on this website. Please contact Diane Hall (dmhall@cdc.gov) or NiCole Buchanan (nbuchana@msu.edu) if you have questions.

Staying and Volunteering in the Suite

Are you going to the APA convention this year?  If so, please join us at the feminist/womanist hospitality suite co-hosted by the Association for Women in Psychology (AWP) and APA Div35, Society for the Psychology of Women (SWP)!
What does VOLUNTEERING and STAYING at the Suite during the convention involve? Each volunteer staffs the suite (making people feel at home, watching over things, etc.) for a total of 5 hours. In return, besides the camaraderie, the volunteer stays in one of the rooms that SWP/AWP subsidize (4 people per room, usually $50–60 per night) or on a sofa or on the floor of the suite (usually $20–30 per night).  It is important work since we want the suite to be inviting and well organized; and it is also enjoyable—a great way to meet people!
This opportunity is open to EVERYONE ... students and non-students, professionals and non-professionals, locally, nationally, AWP, SWP, etc. The only requirements are that you will be at APA for at least 4 of the 5 nights and are willing to help out and welcome people coming to the suite. This is also an affordable way to attend the conference (and it is easier than finding one's own roommates). Please note that we do not offer discounts on registration, etc. The financial benefit comes from the decreased cost and ease of arranging housing. The number of volunteers we can accommodate varies every year and it typically fills up fast! Please e-mail Diane Hall at dmhall@cdc.gov if you are interested in volunteering. We hope to see you at the suite!
