Going to the APA convention this
year? If so, please join us in the hospitality suite that is co-hosted by the
Association for Women
in Psychology (AWP)
and APA Division 35, Society for the Psychology of Women (SPW)! The suite
is a
great place to network, relax, and find support for issues facing women
psychologists. It is also a great way to get to know people in the two organizations.
Events
held in the suite during the day include conversation hours and committee
and task force meetings. These are all open sessions - mental health professionals
and students are welcome to attend. This year, AWP and SPW will be sponsoring
a series of mentoring events, including:
Developing your private practice:
Getting licensed
Planning your practice: preferences and priorities
Setting up and marketing your practice
Issues facing women in private practice
Leadership and Activism:
Community involvement
International activism
Getting involved in AWP, SPW, and APA governance
Getting political
How to succeed in academe:
Getting an academic job
Research & publishing
Qualitative research
Reviewing articles for journals
Overcoming barriers in academe
“Meet the authors” event (click
for more information) during which you can talk with successful
authors
Please check this web site shortly
before the convention to see the final suite schedule: http://www.apa.org/divisions/div35/suitesched.html or
find the AWP/SPW Suite Schedule among your APA fliers when you

Volunteer in the Suite!
What does volunteering and staying at the Suite during
the convention involve? The SPW/AWP suite also serves as a place for suite volunteers
from both organizations to stay at a reduced rate. The suite
set up consists of a larger main room for meetings, a smaller
side room for the book exhibit, and sleeping quarters. Each volunteer
staffs the suite (making people feel at home, watching over things,
etc) for a total of 5 hours. In return, the volunteer stays in
one of the rooms that AWP/SPW subsidize (4 people per room, about
$40 per night) or on the floor of the suite (about $20 per night).
It is important work since we want the suite to be inviting and
well organized. It is also enjoyable! This opportunity is open
to everyone, but students are especially welcome. The only requirements
are that you will be at APA for at least 4 of the 5 nights and
are willing to help out and welcome people coming to the suite.
If you want more information, or to reserve your space (we fill
up!) please call or email Nikolai Houston. Her e-mail address
is annnikolai@earthlink.net. We hope to see you at the suite!
