Dr. Patricia Gonzalez Named 2006–2007 Student Scholar Hispanic Woman/Latina Awardee

Dr. Patricia Gonzalez

Dr. Patricia Gonzalez recently earned her doctorate in Social and Health Psychology from Colorado State University. Dr. Gonzalez is very concerned about the persistent disparities in health and is particularly concerned about cancer disparities among Latinos. In her dissertation titled “The Design, Construction, and Testing of an Instrument to Measure Latina’s Health Beliefs about Breast Cancer and Screening” Dr. Gonzalez developed and tested the Latina Breast Cancer Screening (LBCS) Scale, which measures traditional cultural health beliefs that influence Latinas decision to engage in regular breast cancer screening. Dr. Gonzalez is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center of Community Alliance for Research and Education (CCARE) at the City of Hope National Medical Center, CA. She is collaborating with CCARE’s director Dr. Ashing-Giwa on studies examining quality of life issues among multiethnic breast and cervical cancer survivors to improve HRQOL among underserved populations. As well, she is developing and implementing her studies focusing on cultural health beliefs and health behaviors for Latinas. Her interests are breast cancer screening, cultural health beliefs, measurement, and understanding how culture and ethnicity influence health outcomes.
