Policy Changes
The Committee on Accreditation (CoA) has approved a change to its Guidelines
and Principles for Accreditation of Programs in Professional Psychology (G&P). This
change updates the definition of diversity in the G&P to be consistent
with the definition of diversity in the current APA Ethics Code. Domain
A.5 of the G&P for doctoral graduate programs should read as follows:
The program engages in actions that indicate respect for and understanding
of cultural and individual diversity. Throughout this document, the
phrase “cultural and individual diversity” refers to diversity
with regard to personal and demographic characteristics. These include,
but are not limited to, age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity,
language, national origin, race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, and
social economic status.
Respect for and understanding of cultural and individual diversity is reflected
in the program’s policies for the recruitment, retention, and development
of faculty and students, and in its curriculum and field placements. The
program has nondiscriminatory policies and operating conditions, and it avoids
any actions that would restrict program access or completion on grounds that
are irrelevant to success in graduate training or the profession.

Proposed Changes on Concurrent Accreditation with Canada
The Committee on Accreditation is seeking public comment on a proposed changeto the accreditation Guidelines & Principles and the implications
this change will have on the system of concurrent accreditation with the Canadian
Psychological Association. Comments and reactions from all interested individuals
and organizations will be accepted from May 2, 2005 until November 2, 2005. In
an effort to promote thoughtful discussion, the CoA has provided an electronic-based
comment form for public review and submission of all comments. If you
wish to participate in this process, please visit our website at http://apaoutside.apa.org/accredsurvey/public/.
Call for Comment on Proposed G&P Changes
The CoA has reviewed the prior public comment submitted on the issue of
emerging substantive areas and wishes to thank all participants. In
an effort to address the concerns and needs expressed, the CoA has developed
a new proposal for a change in the scope of accreditation.
There are two items available for comment: 1) the potential change to Section I of the Guidelines & Principles, and 2) the related Implementing Regulation that defines “developed practice areas” for doctoral internship programs. Both items can be downloaded from the public comment website at http://apaoutside.apa.org/accredsurvey/public/. Comments
on this new proposal will be accepted until January 1, 2006.
