Changes to Guidelines and Principles for Accreditation of Programs in Professional Psychology and Accreditation Operating Procedures

The Committee on Accreditation (CoA) has made two changes to its Accreditation Operating Procedures and Guidelines and Principles for Accreditation of Programs in Professional Psychology (G&P). These changes are being made to improve the quality of the Operating Procedures and G&P, and hence to improve the quality of education and training in professional psychology.

1. The first change extends the maximum interval between postdoctoral residency program site visits from 5 years to 7 years (concurrent with doctoral and internship maximums).

Section 4.4 (Site Visit Interval)/Accreditation Operating Procedures: At the time of making an accreditation decision, the CoA will also decide the year in which to schedule the program's next periodic review. For all accredited programs, a period ranging from 3 to 7 years between site visits may be designated, depending upon the program's stage of development.

For programs "accredited, on probation," the interval for the next site visit will be no less than 1 year and no more than 3 years.

For programs on accredited status, if the period of time designated is less than 7 years, the CoA will request a self-study report at the designated time and, following its review of that report, will determine when the next site visit should be scheduled. At a minimum, however, all programs will be site visited at least once every 7 years.

2. The second change is an updated reference to the 1992 APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct as stated below.
