Notice of Actions — Accreditation Status: Spring 2018

The following serves as a notice of actions related to accreditation status taken by the Commission on Accreditation (CoA) of the American Psychological Association at its spring meeting held April 12 until April 15, 2018. This list does not include actions on programs that did not receive an accreditation decision, or programs that submitted other correspondence or interim reports for review at the spring meeting.

Accredited Statuses

Contingent Accreditation

Internships and postdoctoral residency programs are able to seek “accredited, on contingency” status. “Accredited, on contingency” is granted if and only if the program meets all standards except for the inclusion of all required outcome data on interns/residents in the program and after program completion. To move from “accredited, on contingency” status to fully accredited, the program must provide the required data by the time two (2) cohorts have completed the program.

Full Accreditation

CoA grants accreditation of 3-10 years from the date of the site visit. The number of years granted is based on the professional judgment of the CoA consistent with the following guidelines:

• 10 Year Guideline: The program is substantially consistent with the Standards of Accreditation in Health Service Psychology (SoA).
• 3 Year Guideline : The program is adequately consistent with the Standards of Accreditation in Health Service Psychology (SoA). Some areas require the program’s immediate attention; however, the CoA  believes the issues can be corrected in the near future.
• Restore “accredited” status after being places on“accredited, on probation” : A program restored from “accredited, on probation” to “accredited” status is deemed to have come into compliance with the issues identified by the CoA in the probation decision letter and will have a self-study due one year after the receipt of the decision letter.
• The CoA may also assign a program “accredited, on probation” status. Although it is an accredited status, it is considered by the CoA to be an adverse action that serves as notice to the program, its students/interns/residents and the public that in the professional judgment of the CoA, the accredited program is not consistent with the G&P and may have its accreditation revoked. Prior to this designation, a program is provided an opportunity to show cause why it should not be placed on probation by providing a written response to the issues of concern. A program not coming into compliance within two (2) CoA meetings after the show cause notice is assigned “accredited, on probation” status. This status is appealable within 30 days of receipt of written notice of the CoA decision.

Accredited, inactive

• Doctoral, internship, and postdoctoral programs may seek “accredited, inactive” status; however, the definition varies by training level as follows:
• Doctoral: a program that has not admitted students for 2 successive academic years or has provided the CoA with notice that it has decided to phase out and close a program. Requests for inactive status are granted by the CoA for 1 year at a time. Request for renewal of inactive status must be done prior to the beginning of the academic/training year. Programs not granted renewal of inactive status are given notice that they are no longer compliant with the provisions of accreditation and then may be placed on probation.
• Internship: a one-year internship program that will not be accepting funded interns for a given training year. In the case of an internship program that takes 2 year to complete, the program may be designated as “accredited, inactive” if the program undergoes a period of 2 successive years with no funded interns. Requests for inactive status are granted by the CoA for 1 year at a time. Request for renewal of inactive status must be done prior to the beginning of the training year. An internship program is expected to make such a request in writing as soon as it has determined whether it will be accepting interns. Programs not granted renewal of inactive status are given notice that they are no longer compliant with the provisions of accreditation and then may be placed on probation.
• Postdoctoral: a one-year postdoctoral residency program that will not be accepting funded residents for a given training year. In the case of a postdoctoral residency program that takes two years to complete, the program may be designated as “accredited, inactive” if the program undergoes a period of two successive years with no funded residents. Requests for inactive status are granted by the CoA for one year at a time. Request for renewal of inactive status must be done prior to the beginning of the academic/training year. Programs not granted renewal of inactive status are given notice that they are no longer compliant with the provisions of accreditation and then may be placed on probation.
