Notice of Actions — Accreditation Status: Spring 2012

The following serves as a notice of actions related to accreditation status taken by the Commission on Accreditation (CoA) of the American Psychological Association at its spring meeting held March 22-25, 2012. This list does not include actions on programs that did not receive an accreditation decision, or programs that submitted other correspondence or interim reports for review at the spring meeting.

The official listing of all accredited doctoral, internship and postdoctoral programs appears in each December edition of the American Psychologist. An electronic list of all currently accredited programs in psychology is also available.

Accreditation Statuses and Decision Guidelines

Accredited Statuses

The CoA grants accreditation of 3-7 years from the date of the site visit. The number of years granted is based on the professional judgment of the CoA consistent with the following guidelines:

  • 7 Year Guideline: Compliance or substantial compliance with all domains of the Guidelines and Principles for Accreditation (G&P). No serious deficiencies.

  • 5 Year Guideline: Multiple minor deficiencies exist and/or deficiencies have been recently corrected.

  • 3 Year Guideline: Program resource concerns, instability and/or serious deficiencies remain, but can be corrected in the near future (minor deficiencies typically addressed in the next self-study.)

  • The CoA may also assign a program "accredited, on probation" status. Although it is an accredited status, it is considered by the CoA to be an adverse action that serves as notice to the program, its students/interns/residents and the public that in the professional judgment of the CoA, the accredited program is not consistent with the G&P and may have its accreditation revoked. Prior to this designation, a program is provided an opportunity to show cause why it should not be placed on probation by providing a written response to the issues of concern. A program not coming into compliance within two (2) CoA meetings after the show cause notice is assigned "accredited, on probation" status. This status is appealable within 30 days of receipt of written notice of the CoA decision.

Revocation

In the event that a program continues to be out of compliance with the G&P following "accredited, on probation" status, the CoA in its professional judgment may revoke the program's accreditation. "Revocation of accreditation" is considered by the CoA to be an adverse action designating a program that has previously been placed on "accredited, on probation" status and for which the CoA has evidence that the program continues to be substantively inconsistent with the G&P at the time of the review of the program's response to the probation. Revocation is appealable within 30 days of receipt of written notice of the CoA decision.

Additional information on all accreditation statuses can be found on pages 6-7 of the Accreditation Operating Procedures (PDF, 110.3KB).
