At its March 2000 meeting, BEA reviewed its strategic vision and outlined the goals and initiatives to be pursued in the coming years. These goals and initiatives were categorized into four broad subject headings: Emerging Employment Opportunities, Advocacy for Psychology Education, Educational Programs and Curricula, and the Application of Psychology to Education. During this discussion, BEA expressed the several long-term goals within each of these four broad subject headings. This report outlines the major efforts BEA undertook in 2000 to help achieve these long-term goals.

Emerging Employment Opportunities

Goals: BEA will Lead APA in Defining the Application of Psychology Skills and Knowledge by:

  • Assessing the supply and demand for psychologists
  • Reviewing and assessing diversity of employment settings and practices of psychology
  • Developing educational programs to address these opportunities

Activities in 2000:

  • Participated in the Commission on Education and Training Leading to Licensure in Psychology and began consideration of recommendations stemming from the Commission
  • Supported the Shaping the Preparation of Future Social Science and Humanities Faculty: Preparing Future Faculty Program
  • APAGS-BEA Working Group on Teaching and Education Issues convened the 1st Annual "Developing Teachers of Psychology Workshop" at the 2000 APA convention with planning underway to repeat in 2001

Advocacy for Psychology Education

Goals: BEA will Create a Voice for Education by:

  • Educating the public regarding the science of psychology
  • Reaching out to high school, and community college students, and the general public
  • Increasing political advocacy efforts four-fold

Activities in 2000:

  • Began development of the 1st annual Education Leadership Conference
  • Continued development of Education Federal Advocacy Coordinators (FEDAC) Network
  • Proposed development of a "2-year College Teacher Affiliate" APA membership category and the establishment of the "Psychology Teachers at Community Colleges"
  • Continued Extensive outreach to high school teachers and students through TOPSS initiatives

Educational Programs and Curricula

Goals: BEA will Provide Excellence in Education by:

  • Assessing and developing programs addressing critical thinking skills
  • Creating one flagship program for BEA that attracts external funds
  • Hosting a biennial conference for psychology educators
  • Expanding CE to address all aspects of psychology
  • Providing a model and educational outcomes for the undergraduate curriculum

Activities in 2000:

  • Created Task Force on Undergraduate Psychology Major Competencies
  • Began work on revisions to the APA High School Psychology Standards
  • Continued management of ongoing initiatives of the Psychology Partnership Project
  • Managed application process for CoA’s continued recognition by the U.S. Dept. of Education as a reliable authority on the quality of education and training offered by doctoral, internship and postdoctoral residency programs in professional psychology
  • Developed a 5-year plan for Continuing Professional Education Office

Application of Psychology to Education

Goals: BEA will Support Efforts related to the Technological Transfer of Psychological Knowledge to Education by:

  • Assuring psychology is represented in school reform
  • Harnessing psychology's expertise for cyberspace

Activities in 2000:

  • Developed two projects managed by the BEA Technology Working Group: (1) How Technology has Changed the Digital Divide, and (2) Challenges of Technology on Social, Emotional, and Educational Development
  • Supported the ongoing initiatives of the Task Force on Psychology in Early Education and Care
  • Supported the Healthy Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Students Project
  • Supported the development of Gifted/Talented Students Project
  • Hosted Secretary of Education Richard Riley during his keynote address at the APA 2000 convention
