As a result of a review of the APA Sponsor Approval System, and as approved by the APA Council of Representatives in February 1999, the former Continuing Education Committee and the former Committee for the Approval of Continuing Education Sponsors (CACES) merged to create the Continuing Professional Education Committee (CPEC). The new committee met for the first time in March 1999. This report describes the major activities of the Continuing Professional Education Committee during 1999.

1999 CPE Activities at the APA Convention in Boston, Massachusetts

The Continuing Professional Education Committee is responsible for reviewing proposals and making selections for CPE workshops to be presented as part of the APA annual convention. The CPE Committee reviewed more than 100 workshop proposals from which they selected 61 workshops for presentation at the 1999 convention in Boston, MA. There were a total of 1,972 enrollments in the CPE workshops, generating $267,450 in total revenue and a net revenue of $107,400. Evaluation data from the CE Workshops continues to reflect a high level of satisfaction from workshop participants with the quality and value of these programs.

The third annual Distinguished Speaker CPE Seminar, offering continuing education credit, was held on Sunday night during the convention. Thomas Brown, PhD, Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Yale University School of Medicine, presented a three-hour session entitled "Inattention and 'Executive Functions': New Understandings of ADD Syndrome" to an audience of 112 psychologists. A dessert reception followed the presentation, providing opportunity for participants to converse with the speaker. This event will continue to be an annual event at the APA convention.

The Committee hosted an Open Forum that allowed APA-approved sponsors and sponsor-applicants to ask questions about APA approval and about procedures of the Sponsor Approval System. APA CPE Staff and Continuing Professional Education Committee members were present to review the Criteria and Procedures Manual and the application process. Representatives from approximately 18 APA-approved sponsors attended the forum.

Sponsor Applications, Dispositions, and CE Activities Summary

During 1999, the Continuing Professional Education Committee reviewed a total of 226 applications from organizations seeking approval as sponsors of Continuing Professional Education for psychologists.

  • 86 were new applications of which 60 were approved, 20 were denied, and six were deferred
  • Of the four applications deferred at the March 1999 meeting, one was approved and one was denied. Two organizations failed to submit the requested information and were dropped from consideration
  • Of the currently approved organizations submitting an application for continued approval, six were denied
  • A total of 637 sponsors offered 4,162 CE programs during 1999 that served a total of 51,225 psychologists

Other Continuing Professional Education Initiatives and Programs

APA's Independent Study Program currently consists of 36 programs developed from APA publications and offered for CE credits. Seven new programs were introduced during 1999, and a collaborative agreement between APA and the APA Insurance Trust continues to provide APA members with discounted programs that offer CE credits in addition to a reduction in liability insurance premiums. Ten new programs will be released in 2000.

The first annual CPE Winter Weekend was held on January 7-10, 1999 in San Diego, California, with an attendance of 110. The conference, entitled "Psychology and Medicine: Emerging Research and New Applications for Practice" brought together research and practice issues in areas such as assessment and treatment of depression in primary care, psychological interventions for disease management, and the application of business models for establishing psychology practices in medical settings. The second annual CPE Winter Weekend was scheduled for February 10-13, 2000 in San Diego, and is entitled "The Violence Around Us: Changes and Challenges for Practice."

45 psychologists and their families took advantage of the opportunity to travel while earning CE credits during a Mediterranean Cruise in June 1999. Dr. Shane Murphy presented a seminar entitled "Coaching Your Clients: The Psychology of Superior Performance." Plans were also completed for a Southern Caribbean Cruise on April 1-8, 2000 that will offer an 8-hour seminar presented by Dr. Bill Foote entitled "Psychological Evaluation in Workplace Discrimination Cases: Research, Law, & Practice."
