| Committee on Accreditation Activities 1998 The appendix to this report presents a brief profile of the 1998 Committee on Accreditation (CoA) membership. In terms of individual and discipline diversity, 52% of the CoA members in 1998 were women and 14% were of ethnic minority background. Psychologists serving on the CoA represented 25 (50%) of the APA divisions, through which 56% were APA Fellows. Among those eligible, 27% were ABPP Diplomates. Fifteen states from various regions of the country were geographically represented on the CoA.
Accreditation Reviews and Consultation: Annual Summary
During calendar year 1998, the CoA, chaired by Michael J. Patton, Ph.D., met on the following dates: March 6-8, July 17-19, and October 23-25, completing the reviews of 72 doctoral and 96 internship programs for a total of 168 reviews. Of those programs, 160 (95%) either attained initial accredited status or maintained their prior accredited status. In addition, the CoA reviewed complaints filed against accredited programs as well as special reports submitted by programs other than those accounted for in the major reviews noted above. Throughout the year, Office of Program Consultation and Accreditation staff and the Committee also provided consultative guidance to programs.
Psychology Accreditation Marks 50 Years of Operation To celebrate the 50-year anniversary of accreditation in psychology, the CoA conducted a symposium on the past, present, and future of accreditation on Friday, August 14. A reception was held later that evening. Current and former CoA members, accreditation site visitors, program training directors, and members of APA governance were in attendance at both sessions.
External Recognition of APA Accreditation: An Update
Just as the CoA reviews for quality and public recognition the education and training programs in professional psychology, the U.S. Secretary of Education (through a national advisory panel) reviews the practices of accrediting agencies. The CoA is recognized by the Secretary as the accrediting body for professional psychology. In 1998, the CoA submitted a progress report on its activities to come into full compliance with the Secretary?s recognition criteria. That report was reviewed and accepted by the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity at its December 1998 meeting. The CoA will be submitting a full petition for continued recognition by the Secretary in May 1999.
The Council on Higher Education (CHEA), a new organization for the advancement of self-regulation through accreditation, has adopted recognition criteria and a process to become effective in January 1999. CHEA will be sending a two-year recognition review schedule to participating organizations in the near future. The APA Program Consultation and Accreditation Office continues to monitor developments in CHEAs recognition process.
