Strategic Planning Activities
- The Office of Continuing
Professional Education developed a five-year plan for continuing
professional education and training efforts at APA that will include a
distance learning initiative, collaborative efforts with state psychological
associations and APA divisions, and extended opportunities for specialized
training for psychologists.
CPE Activities at the 2000 APA
Convention in Washington, DC
- The CPE Committee reviewed more
than 100 workshop proposals, from which they selected 59 workshops,
covering 28 content areas, for presentation at the 2000 convention in
Washington, DC. There were a total of 911 enrollments in the CPE
workshops, generating $217,000 in total revenue and a net revenue of
$93,200. Evaluation data from workshop participants continue to reflect a
high level of satisfaction with the quality and value of these programs.
- The 4th annual Distinguished
Speaker CPE Seminar was held on Sunday evening during the convention. Alan
Goldstein, PhD, Professor of Psychology, John Jay College of Criminal
Justice, presented a three-hour session entitled "Tools, Tests,
and Techniques in Forensic Psychological Assessment and Practice"
to an audience of 72 psychologists. A dessert reception followed the
presentation, providing an opportunity for participants to converse with
the speaker. This event will continue to be an annual event at the APA
convention.
- The Committee hosted an Open Forum
that allowed APA-approved sponsors and sponsor-applicants to ask questions
about APA approval and about procedures of the Sponsor Approval System.
APA CPE Staff and Continuing Professional Education Committee members were
present to review the Criteria and Procedures Manual and the
application process. Representatives from approximately 30 APA-approved
sponsors attended the forum.
Sponsor Applications, Dispositions,
and CE Activities Summary
During 2000, the Continuing
Professional Education Committee reviewed a total of 207 applications from
organizations seeking approval as sponsors of Continuing Professional
Education for psychologists.
- 86 were new applications of which
65 were approved, 13 were denied, and 8 were deferred. Of the 4
applications deferred, 2 were approved and 2 were denied. Organizations
deferred at the September 2000 meeting will be reviewed in March 2001.
- Of the currently approved
organizations submitting an application for continued approval, 3 were
denied
- A total of 339 sponsors offered
4,987 CE programs during 2000 that served a total of 95,088 psychologists
- As of December 31, 2000, 650
organizations were listed as APA-approved sponsors of continuing education
for psychologists
Other Continuing Professional
Education Initiatives and Programs
- The Office of CPE hosted the 2nd
Annual CPE Winter Weekend in San Diego on February 10?13, 2000. The
program was entitled "The Violence Around Us: Changes and
Challenges for Your Practice."
- The 3rd Annual CPE
Winter Weekend, "Families Across the Lifespan: Update on Practice
Issues," was scheduled for February 8-11, 2001 in New Orleans,
Louisiana. The APA Office on Continuing Professional Education established
a collaborative agreement with APA Division of Psychotherapy (Division 29)
for joint program planning for the event and the concurrent hosting of the
Division 29 Executive Board meeting during the conference. APA's Division
of Independent Practice (Division 42) will participate in the program for
2002.
- APA's Independent Study Program
currently consists of 36 programs developed from APA publications. Ten new
programs were introduced during 2000, and 14 new programs will be released
in 2001. A collaborative agreement between APA and the APA Insurance Trust
continues to provide APA members with discounted programs that offer CE
credits in addition to a reduction in liability insurance premiums.
- 14 psychologists and their
families took advantage of the opportunity to travel while earning CE
credits during a Southern Caribbean cruise on April 1-8, 2000. Dr. Bill
Foote presented an 8-hour seminar entitled "Psychological Evaluation
in Workplace Discrimination Cases: Research, Law, & Practice."

Jeffrey E. Hecker, PhD served as
Chair for 2000, and Ellen L. Nuffer, EdD served as Vice-Chair. At the
September 2000 meeting the Committee selected Anthony J. Goreczny, PhD, to
serve as Chair for 2001. Augustine (Gus) Barón, PsyD, will serve as
Vice-Chair.
