Psychology and the Council on Undergraduate Research

The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) helps to strengthen the research programs of faculty in predominantly undergraduate institutions and promotes research by undergraduate students in all settings of science, mathematics, and engineering education. A Psychology division was established within CUR during its annual business meeting at Pomona College in 1993. In the short years since then, CUR has become an important mechanism for advancing collaborative psychological science at the undergraduate level. This is particularly true with respect to providing concrete, realistic assistance to psychology faculty working to:

  • develop and maintain a research program
  • integrate teaching and research
  • increase involvement of minority students in research.

In turn, the effectiveness of psychologists in the undergraduate research enterprise has been recognized by CUR in significant ways. An example is the election of psychologist David Elmes, of Washington and Lee University, to the CUR presidency, a role in which he served between 1999-2000. In addition to Elmes' administrative roles in CUR and his home institution, he conducts olfaction research and teaches and writes books about experimental methodology.

Another psychologist honored by CUR is Julio Ramirez, of Davidson College, was named as one of the first two CUR Fellows. The CUR Biennial Fellow Award "applauds individuals who exemplify the ideals of CUR" by having developed nationally respected research programs involving undergraduates of all backgrounds, by incorporating research activities into their teaching, and by leading efforts to institutionalize research.

The theme of the 9th National CUR conference is Undergraduate Research for All. The schedule is filled with workshops devoted to all aspects of undergraduate research, from the nuts and bolts of funding and instrumentation to curricular issues and publishing. There are also two special components to the meeting: a special symposium entitled Symposium on Research Responsibility and Undergraduates research responsibilities and ethics, and Assessing Institutional Environments for Undergraduate Learning. The conference will be held June 19-22, 2002 at Connecticut College, New London, CT. For more information about the conference and CUR, go to www.cur.org.
