Graduate Education in Psychology

Psychology is a very broad discipline with many applications. Annually, approximately 74,000 bachelor's degrees, 15,000 master's degrees, and 4,000 doctoral degrees are awarded in psychology.

A graduate degree is generally required for most positions in psychology for teaching, research, and applied work. Indeed a doctoral degree is most commonly the minimal academic degree required for independent licensed practice as a psychologist, for faculty appointment at most colleges and universities, and for other senior research, consulting, or management positions related to the field of psychology.

If you believe that psychology is the field for you, the next challenge is to find a graduate program of study that is the best match for your career interests, needs, capabilities, resources, education and work experience.
