Announcing the 2009 APA PT@CC Electronic Project Contest
For Community College Psychology Students

The APA PT@CC Electronic Project Contest aims to promote active learning through the creation of electronic presentations by psychology students at community colleges. All entries must involve a computerized presentation fitting one of the following categories:

  • Presentations designed as demonstrations or teaching modules that illustrate and explain a psychological concept, theory, or research discovery.
  • Presentations that illustrate and explain a service learning experience or other application of psychology in the community.

Guidelines

To enter the APA PT@CC Electronic Project Contest, students must submit the following components:

  • An electronic presentation designed for a college student audience.This presentation should run on PowerPoint, Corel Presentations, Java Script, or other compatible software. The content of the presentation should feature a connection to the current psychological literature. Please note that your submission under the foregoing APA Guidelines constitutes your representation and warranty that any materials, figures, information, or graphics incorporated in the presentation is either the original creation of the author or authors or is the creation of a third party from whom the authors have obtained permission to reproduce for the purposes outlined herein. Also, your submission constitutes your authorization to the APA to reproduce and publicly display the presentation in electronic, online, and/or print format, including but not limited to on the APA’s web site.
  • A written description that includes a brief overview of the project and its goals. The paper must be no more than 5 pages long, excluding the title page, abstract, and references. It must also conform to APA style. See the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.) for details. The paper (with the exception of the cover sheet) must not contain any information that would identify the author(s) or the college. Entries may be developed by a single student or by a team.
  • A sponsorship letter from a psychology faculty member who supervised the project. Faculty sponsors must be members of PT@CC. The sponsorship letter certifies that (1) the project is substantially the work of the student(s) submitting the project (2) the electronic portion of the project has been presented in class; and (3) the project complies with the APA Code of Ethics.
  • A contest cover sheet or a cover letter from the primary author giving: (1) the name(s) of student author(s), (2) name of the college, (3) name, college mailing address, and e-mail address or telephone number of the PT@CC faculty sponsor, (4) home telephone number or e-mail address of the primary author, and (5) signatures(s) of the author(s). The contest cover sheet, along with further information, can be found at the PT@CC Web site.

Awards

The first place winner will be awarded $500. The second place winner will be awarded $300, and the third place winner will be awarded $200.

Certificates for all winners will be presented at the APA annual convention. An announcement about the 2009 contest and the winners will be posted on the APA Web site.

Eligibility

The competition is open to students currently enrolled at a community college or other two-year school. Students are eligible if they are community college students who have not previously completed a bachelor’s degree. Their faculty sponsors must be members of the APA Psychology Teachers at Community Colleges (PT@CC). Deadlines

Entries must be postmarked by May 31, 2009. Winners will be announced by July 1, 2009.

APA Psychology Teachers at Community Colleges (PT@CC)

PT@CC is an acronym for the APA Psychology Teachers at Community Colleges, a group of members and affiliates of the American Psychological Association. PT@CC was established in 2001. Its elected Executive Committee represents the interests of community college psychology teachers. APA offers a number of benefits to faculty through PT@CC, such as teaching-related programming, awards, competitions for community college teachers and students, and a subscription to the quarterly newsletter, Psychology Teacher Network (PTN), for teachers of introductory psychology.
