Organizations/Committees that support the Teaching
of Psychology
To extend the collaborations that currently exist between the many organizations
concerned with undergraduate education in psychology, the Society for the Teaching
of Psychology (APA Division 2) convened a meeting at the 2003 APA Education
Leadership Conference (ELC) on Sunday, September 7, 2003, to discuss the strong
relationships that currently exist and to propose ways to enhance communications
and partnerships.
As a first step, the groups recommended including information about each of
the organizations in a central location, along with links to their Web sites:
Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP)
The Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP) represents the interests of
psychologists in academic institutions from the secondary through the graduate
level. It promotes teaching excellence, research on teaching, and professional
identity and development; sponsors and co-sponsors teaching-related programs
at national and regional psychology conventions; publishes Teaching of Psychology;
disseminates teaching and advising materials through the Office of Teaching
Resources in Psychology (OTRP); and administers annual Excellence in Teaching
Awards and the G. Stanley Hall Lectures.
Council
of Teachers of Undergraduate Psychology (CTUP)
The Council of Teachers of Undergraduate Psychology (CTUP) invites all teachers
of undergraduate psychology in high schools, community colleges, four-year colleges,
and universities to join us in improving education in psychology. For more than
26 years, we have been sponsoring symposia, poster and paper sessions, invited
addresses, teaching activity exchanges, and conversion and social hours at the
regional psychology conventions. We hold our national business meeting at the
annual APA convention and coordinate our activities with APA Division Two (Teaching
of Psychology), Psi Chi, and Psi Beta.
Membership in CTUP provides an opportunity to interact with psychology faculty
at all levels of education who share your interests and concerns. Membership
also affords you the opportunity to become involved with a national organization
with a focus on teaching. You too, can be a big fish in the right pond. CTUP
also provides a good way to document your active interest in teaching for your
institutional annual review. Since excellence in teaching is so difficult to
document, it is a tangible way to show commitment and involvement in teaching.
Council of Undergraduate Psychology Programs (CUPP)
The Council of Undergraduate Psychology Programs works:
- To promote the development of undergraduate psychology by providing a forum
for discussion of matters of interest and concern to undergraduate programs
in psychology,
- To promote effective leadership of undergraduate psychology programs by providing
a forum for undergraduate psychology chairpersons and program directors to exchange
ideas, and
- To interact with and to make recommendations to appropriate officers, boards,
and committees of national and regional professional psychological associations,
representatives of government agencies, foundations, and other organizations
and persons on topics relevant to the interest and activities of undergraduate
programs in psychology.
