APA/IES PERT
Description:
Psychology, a science of learning and behavior, is a core discipline in the
field of education research. Psychology’s rigorous methodologies and biopsychosocial
models have much to contribute to our national effort to improve education.
To be maximally effective in this endeavor, the discipline of psychology needs
to attract greater numbers of its researchers to careers in school-based education
research. The overall objective of the APA/IES PERT program is to increase the application
of cutting edge psychological science to high quality research on teaching,
learning and achievement of pre K-12 students.
This new fellowship program is designed to match promising psychologists with established mentors for intensive research training in order to:
– Attract psychological scientists to conduct research at the interface
of psychology and education
– Develop education and training models to advance school-based scientific
research
– Increase the visibility of education research within the discipline
of psychology
The postdoctoral training experience is intended to prepare fellows for an academic research leadership position. Fellowships will be awarded to individuals who are interested in pursuing school-based research related to teaching and learning and who have been awarded a doctoral degree in psychology by the time of appointment. The APA/IES PERT experience will be of sufficient depth to enable fellows to learn to design and conduct school-based education research. In active collaboration with their mentor, will develop a Research Training Plan that addresses issues such as: scaling up research projects, the pragmatics of conducting school-based research, reading comprehension, preschool curriculum, learning in the classroom, evaluation research on education interventions, teacher recruitment, teacher preparation, and teacher development, among others. In addition to being engaged in research training, all fellows will participate in a series of joint activities that will be focused on translating research into practice, promoting career socialization, building a community of APA/IES scholars, and developing interest in education sciences throughout the graduate education pipeline in psychology.
Features:
• APA/IES PERT fellowships will be awarded for up to 2 years
• The intensive postdoctoral training experience will be designed to be
of sufficient depth to enable fellows to design and conduct school-based education
research
• An annual stipend of $55,000
• Host institution will provide matching funds at the level of fringe benefits for a full time member of the research faculty
• Career development activities organized by APA and designed to promote professional socialization, build a community of APA/IES PERT scholars, and promote interest in education sciences throughout the graduate education pipeline in psychology
• All APA/IES PERT Fellows will attend a 2-day conference that will serve as an orientation to the fellowship and as a forum to develop a network of the next generation of researchers exploring the interface of psychology and education
• All APA/IES PERT fellows, mentors, and advisory panel members will attend annual mini-institutes organized and conducted by the APA Education and Science Directorates that will feature discussions of:
– The policy arena in education
– Translating research outcomes to the world of practice
– Processes associated with scaling up research outcomes
– Networking among scholars, enhancing their development as community
• All APA/IES PERT fellows and mentors will be encouraged to engage in outreach activities with doctoral programs in psychology to promote interest in school-based education research (e.g., mentors provide colloquia on school-based research to selected graduate departments of psychology, fellows present to student groups about opportunities in the field)
• Fellows will be encouraged and supported financially to present their research at professional conferences
