"I would encourage all teachers of psychology to consider attending this workshop" ~2005 Workshop Participant

Summary of the 2006 Workshop

The American Psychological Association (APA) Education Directorate and Clark University were pleased to hold the second annual APA/Clark University Workshop for High School Teachers July 10-12, 2006 in Worcester, MA. The workshop was sponsored by Clark University and the American Psychological Foundation (APF). Clark University has played a prominent role in the development of psychology as a distinguished discipline in the United States, and was the birthplace of the APA in 1892.

The goal is to advance the teaching of precollege psychology as part of APA's Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools (TOPSS) efforts, says Emily Leary, APA's precollege psychology program officer.

Workshop presenters included Clark psychology professors Michael Addis, PhD, Michael Bamberg, PhD, and Nancy Budwig, PhD, as well as APA Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools (TOPSS) Past Chair Amy Fineburg of Spain Park High School ( Hoover, AL) and TOPSS member Oliver Bloch of Rye Country Day School (Rye, NY). Mr. Bloch had been a participant during the first APA/Clark University workshop in 2005. Twenty-five high school teachers from around the country participated in the workshop.

The workshop began the afternoon of Monday, July 10. Following an opening session on the history of psychology and a tour of the psychology department, participants visited the Clark University Archives, where they viewed historical records. Dr. Gerald P. Koocher, APA President, met with attendees and delivered a lecture on 20th century clinical psychology. Dr. Koocher’s address was followed by a reception and dinner. Amy Fineburg and Oliver Bloch led an informal conversation hour back in the Clark dorms following the dinner.

On Tuesday, July 11, five sessions were held on Masculinities and Human Well-Being (Dr. Addis), Involving Students in Research (Fineburg and Bloch), Involving Human Participants in Research: Institutional Research Boards (Dr. Bamberg), Developmental Psychology: Children’s Language (Dr. Budwig), and Memory Activites (Fineburg and Bloch). Each session provided participants with active learning techniques, activities, and content updates. An outdoor picnic was cancelled due to rain, but a casual dinner in the psychology department allowed for extended conversation among the teachers.

On Wednesday, July 12, Amy Fineburg and Oliver Bloch presented sessions on Learning Activities and Teaching with Technology. The workshop concluded by noon.

The idea for this workshop grew from the vision and generosity of Clark alumnus, and longtime APA member, Lee Gurel, PhD. Associated costs to participants, including room, board, meals, resources, and travel, were covered by Clark University and APF.
