APA and Clark University launch high school psychology workshop Monitor sep05thumb.jpg
The goal is to advance the teaching of precollege psychology as part of APA's Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools (TOPSS) efforts, says Emily Leary, APA's precollege psychology program officer.

The first annual APA/Clark University Workshop for High School Teachers was held June 24-26, 2005 at Clark University in Worcester, MA. The three-day workshop was attended by twenty-five high school teachers, and featured sessions on clinical and developmental psychology, the history of psychology, and research methods. All sessions were held on the Clark University campus, and accommodations were provided in the on-campus dorms.

The workshop began at 2:00 pm on Friday, June 24, in the Clark University Psychology Department. After a welcome from Clark University Psychology Chair Michael Addis and introductions, participants enjoyed a tour of the historic psychology building and a session on the history of psychology.  Clark University has long played a prominent role in the development of psychology as a distinguished scientific discipline in the United States, and key historic events such as the 1909 lectures attended by Freud and Jung were highlighted. A reception held in the Clark University archives, where participants viewed original documents, was followed by dinner at the house of the Clark University President John Bassett.

The three-day workshop was attended by twenty-five high school teachers, and featured sessions on clinical and developmental psychology, the history of psychology, and research methods.

On Saturday, June 25, Clark University psychology professor James Cordova, PhD, presented on his research focusing on marital/couple health. Psychology professor Nancy Budwig, PhD, later presented on developmental psychology research. Both sessions provided participants with updates in each respective field. Two presenters from the APA Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools (TOPSS) shared various teaching activities with the participants. Presenters Debra Park of West Deptford High School (Westville, NJ) and Rob McEntarffer of Southeast High School ( Lincoln, NE) are both Past-Chairs of TOPSS. A Saturday evening picnic was held at a nearby lake. Informal sessions were held for participants both Friday and Saturday evenings back at the dorm.

The Sunday morning sessions focused on research. Debby and Rob presented on involving students in research, including highlighting the new TOPSS research manual Conducting Psychological Research for Science Fairs: A Teacher's Guide and Research Manual. Clark Psychology Professor Michael Bamberg, PhD held a final session on Institutional Review Boards.

Each of the twenty-five participants received: a booklet of teaching resources and an accompanying CD-ROM; a booklet containing information provided by the Clark University professors; materials from APA TOPSS; access to the online blackboard site; and free textbooks and other materials. All funding for the workshop was provided through a generous gift from Dr. Lee Gurel, an APA member and Clark University alumnus.
