2006 APF/APA TOPSS Scholars Competition Winners Announced
The APA Education Directorate, the APA Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools (TOPSS), and the American Psychological Foundation (APF) are pleased to announce the winners of the sixth annual APF/APA TOPSS Scholars Competition.
Megan Skinner from Hoover High School, Des Moines, Iowa ( Affect of Childhood Parenting Styles on Current Parent Choices), Candice Post from Shawnee High School, Medford, New Jersey ( Effects of Imaginary Companions on Child Development), and Melissa Stoffers from Colonia High School, Colonia, New Jersey ( The Well Being of Retarded Adults after Institutionalization vs. Staying at home During childhood) were selected as the winners of the 2006 APF/APA TOPSS Scholars Competition. Each of these three winners received $1,000 in scholarship money, generously contributed by the American Psychological Foundation.
A panel of college and university level psychology faculty selected these three students based on their ability to complete a critical analysis and synthesis of empirical research and generate a quality research proposal. The essay question posed for this year's competition focused on aspects of APA President Dr. Gerald P. Koocher’s presidential focus on children and families.
