2004 Annual Reports for Boards and Committees

History Oversight Committee Report

The HOC met at APA in Honolulu, July 29, 2004. Members present were Nicole Barenbaum, University of the South; David Leary, University of Richmond (Chair); Alexandra Rutherford, York University; Wade Pickren, APA Historian and Archivist (ex officio). This report includes items discussed at the meeting, with updates on selected items.

I. HOC Discussion and Recommendations

A. Committee Membership: In concordance with established precedent, Alexandra Rutherford will serve as the chair of the committee in 2005 and a new member will join the committee to replace Nicole Barenbaum. The committee suggested several new member nominations be forwarded to Division 26. Update: Debra Sue Pate was selected as the new member of the HOC.

B. HOC members discussed their support of the request to the APA for an annual subvention of $60,000 to the Archives of the History of American Psychology. Discussion ensued about need for encouragement of Council to approve the request.

C. The HOC was updated about the suggested changes to the proposal to consider several revisions and additions to the APA Publication Manual that would support scholarship in the history of psychology. The APA Publisher, Gary VandenBos, has received the recommendations and will encourage their consideration in the next revision of the Publication Manual.

D. Wade Pickren suggested encouraging Division 26 members to become more involved in APA governance and to share programming with other Divisions at future conventions, especially in regard to . building coalitions to strengthen the place of history in psychology.

II. Report of the Staff Liaison

    1. Wade Pickren reported on the involvement of his office in Past-President Robert Sternberg's AudioVisual History Task Force. A subcommittee of the Task Force is working on documenting the history of race and gender in psychology with a focus on the last 50 years. Pickren also reported on the project to include classic books and more recent distinguished out-of-print books in the new PsycBOOKS [electronic books] database. He reported that the Monitor/Monitor on Psychology has been digitized and is fully searchable. A three-part online database available to the public is being prepared that will include the Online Guide to Manuscripts and Archives in the History of Psychology, the governance history of APA, and biographies of psychologists. Pickren reported the continuation of oral histories, the publication of Psychology and NIMH, and a new book on the VA and Psychology.
