For those students who have the opportunity to do some peer reviewing, a forthcoming APA book, "Reviewing Scientific Works in Psychology," may offer some guidance in writing a thoughtful and thorough critique.
The volume, edited by former APA president Robert J. Sternberg, PhD, includes advice on reviewing empirical papers, theory articles, book chapters and other scholarly works. For example, according to contributing author Abraham Tessler, PhD, professor emeritus at the University of Georgia, journal article reviewers may want to read the entire work before jotting down specific critiques. Often methodological choices make more sense when considered in the work's entire context, he writes. The book can be ordered online in July at the APA Book Web site or by calling APA at (800) 374-2721.
