Psychology students spent more money applying for internships through the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers match in 2011 than in any previous year. What's driving the trend? Rising gas prices, students opting to travel to more sites and students applying to increasing numbers of sites are a few potential culprits, says APPIC Match Coordinator Greg Keilin, PhD. But one thing is for sure: Advanced graduate students should plan ahead for the expense. "The debt load incurred through graduate school is already huge, particularly for PsyD students, and then they get into the whole internship application process and it can really be expensive," he says.
