Orientation, Objectives, and Emphasis of Department:
The psychology program is designed to develop research scholars, college teachers, and scientific/professional psychologists in the six areas listed. Individual student programs combine basic courses and seminars in a variety of specialized areas, research experience, and practica in both on- and off-campus settings. Students may elect to minor in certain areas as well, including personality-social, quantitative methods, and applied social research. In addition, the social-personality area has begun a new specialization in the Psychology of Peace and Prevention of Violence. Students with applied interests, such as clinical and developmental, have ample opportunity for in-depth practical experience.
Special Facilities or Resources
The Department has specialized laboratory facilities, including biochemistry, eyetracking, video data analysis, and other laboratories. It maintains its own clinic for research, clinical training, and service to the community. It provides students with access to microcomputers and to the VAX mainframes at University Computing Services. Departmental facilities and faculty are supplemented by the University's participation in Five-College programs (with Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges) and by cooperation with other University departments including Computer and Information Science, Industrial Engineering, Education, Linguistics, Sociology, and Biology. The University of Massachusetts also offers a separate PhD degree-granting program in neuroscience and behavior. Many of the students in this program receive the bulk of their training in the Psychology Department and work primarily with Psychology faculty. Students interested in training in neuroscience and behavior should apply for admission directly to that program.
Send to: Graduate Admissions Office, Goodell Building; University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA 01003. Students are admitted in the fall, application deadline is See below. January 2 for Clinical; January 15 for Neuroscience & Behavior; February 1 for all other programs. Fee: $45.00.
