activities, interests and opportunities
Who are APA's international members?
- APA has around 3500 international affiliate members – these are
psychologists who are members of their own national psychology
associations and enjoy APA affiliate member status. For more
information see www.apa.org/membership.
- Around 3000 Full APA members and Student Affiliates live outside the
US.
- Many of APA's US-based members are also avid internationalists and
support research and scholarly collaborations (see Division 52 below).
What is the Office of International Affairs?
What are APA's international activities?
- APA is an NGO that is in special consultative status at the United
Nations with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and also has
relations with the Department of Public Information at the UN. You can

- APA sponsors two international awards each year: the APA Awards for
Distinguished Contributions to International Psychology (see www.apa.org/international/awards/distinguished.html)
and the APA Humanitarian Award (see www.apa.org/international/awards/humanitarian.html).
- APA offers awards and grants to international scholars (see www.apa.org/international/awards).
- APA's publications reach readers all over the world; and APA
journals and books publish international authors.
- A number of APA's offices engage in international activities –
concerning disabilities, AIDS, children’s issues, research
collaborations, and more.
- APA regularly attends international congresses. Typical APA presence
includes publication and informational booths, and a special social
hour or reception hosted by the APA President and CEO.
- APA hosts international visitors from psychology organizations;
organizes book donations to developing countries; and seeks to inform
and facilitate international collaboration.
What is the Committee on International Relations in
Psychology (CIRP)?
CIRP is the advisory arm to APA governance about all
things international. It is a committee elected by APA's council of
representatives to address international policy and program development in
research, teaching, practice and public interest arenas. It reports
directly to the APA Board of Directors and oversees APA’s representation

Is there a Division for International Members
APA’s Division 52 is the international division. Its members are both US
psychologists with an interest in international research, scholarship and
collaborations, and international psychologists. See www.internationalpsychology.net/home
