Director, Planning & Journals Operations

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Psychology, Social Science or Business Administration required
  • Advanced degree (MA, MBA, PhD) strongly preferred
  • A minimum of 7 to 10 years experience in consulting, accounting and finance may substitute for educational requirements
  • Experience collecting, analyzing and interpreting data
  • Excellent communication skills

Description:

  • Budget management and analysis for all OPD programs or 66% of total APA revenue ($75M Revenue, $50M Expenses). Includes approximately 130 programs. Duties include:
    • Work directly with the Executive Director to prepare, analyze, interpret and present budget and financial reports on all budgetary aspects of OPD.
    • Develop budget targets with Executive Director and Sr. Directors for Journals, PsycINFO, PsycBOOKS, Sales & Marketing, Leasing and Licensing, and Executive Director Office units.
    • Direct budget preparation, review and revision with budget managers from each OPD unit.
    • Serve as primary liaison between OPD and APA Finance on all budget related issues and queries.
  • Responsible for all budgetary processes for the Journals Program ($33M Revenue, $11M Expenses). Includes 58+ journal, 4 personnel and 6 miscellaneous programs. Duties include:
    • Analyzes subscription numbers, rates and revenue distribution ($16M)
    • Allocates of Electronic licensing and Royalty revenue ($18 M)
    • Projects production expenses for all journal programs based on circulation, page count, frequency and other variables ($5M)
    • Calculates Honoraria and Office Expenses due to Editorial Offices ($3M)
    • Estimates Royalty payments due to the owners of contract journals ($.8M)
    • Develops staffing models for APA, Freelance and Temporary personnel ($2.5M)
  • Responsible for all financial processes for the Journals Program. Duties include:
    • Manage and implement new journals related revenue streams.
    • Analyze monthly account reports to track revenue and expenses.
    • Develop, maintain and analyze statistical records for all journal accounts.
    • Prepare specialized financial analyses for specific journals or groups of journals related to performance, contract or other issues.
    • Act as liaison to other APA groups including Finance, Sales and Marketing, PsycINFO and Service Center.
    • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions to ensure timely and accurate payments are made to vendors and other contractual entities (i.e., APA Divisions and non-profit Societies).
  • Responsible for financial and operational oversight of 58+ journal editorial offices. Duties include:
    • Establishing and maintaining professional and productive communications with all editorial offices.
    • Manages Publishing, Editor, Associate Editor, Bulk Purchase and other contracts including timely payment of Honoraria, Office Expenses and other contractually obligated payments. Assist offices in completing required quarterly and annual reports.
    • Directs new editor searches (6-9 per year). Maintains highly professional and confidential information regarding candidates and others involved in the search procedure.
    • Prepares materials and participates in governance proceedings of the P&C Board and Council of Editors.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing strategic initiatives and process improvements for Journal acquisition, production and editorial units. Duties include:
    • Develops financial models and business plans for all new and potential journal acquisitions (12-15 per year).
    • Directs all operational processes required to establish new journals in the APA systems. Involves close coordination with numerous APA personnel from Finance, Service Center, PsycINFO, Information Technology and Legal groups.
    • Analyzes, develops and reports on operational statistics regarding the processes and efficiencies of the journal production and editorial units. Implement process changes with journal management team.
    • Conduct research and work closely with outside vendors regarding the development and potential implementation of new business models to provide better service to APA constituencies and ensure that the journals program follows industry standard best practices.
