Summer Program in Neuroscience, Ethics, and Survival Skills (SPINES)

All Neuroscience Fellows are required to attend the Summer Program in Neuroscience, Ethics, and Survival Skills (SPINES) during their first summer. Expenses for this summer program will be covered by your MFP in Neuroscience Fellowship if you are selected as a MFP in Neuroscience Fellow. SPINES is a month long program, beginning in June and ending in July, at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, MA. The 2004 SPINES course will be held June 19 - July 17, 2004. The application deadline for SPINES is February 1, 2004.

This program is designed to broaden your knowledge of neuroscience scientific ethical issues (gender and racial issues, faculty/student relationship, research issues) and scientific survival skills (writing and presentation skills, granting mechanisms, career planning, and job opportunities). These ethical and survival skills will be combined with opportunities to increase you knowledge in the neurosciences.

During SPINES you will have many opportunities including:

1) Discussing issues in neuroscience with several leaders in the field and to work with some of these researchers in their labs at the MBL.

2) To attend either the Neurobiology or Neural Systems and Behavior courses.

3) Access to the MBL library, open 24 hours and carries most of the premier journals in neuroscience.

4) Instruction on how to compose your data into an article or a grant proposal. AND

5) The opportunity to present your work at a campus poster session and an oral presentation at a SPINES sponsored conference.
