Div. 2 sponsors Teaching Institute in Chicago

Div. 2 (Society for the Teaching of Psychology) will sponsor the 15th Annual Association for Psychological Science/Society for the Teaching of Psychology Teaching Institute on May 22 in Chicago, in conjunction with the Association for Psychological Science's annual meeting.

The institute will feature talks by:

• Kenneth D. Keith, PhD, of San Diego State University, on "The Frog in the Well: Culture and Four Decades in the Classroom."

• William A. Addison, PhD, of Eastern Illinois University, on "The Multidimensionality of Effective Teaching: Evidence from Student Evaluations."

• Randolph A. Smith, PhD, of Lamar University, on "Moving Toward the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: The Classroom Can be a Lab, Too!"

Div. 9 publishes a new journal

Div. 9 (Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues) announces the publication of the inaugural issue of Social Issues and Policy Review, edited by Victoria M. Esses, PhD, and John F. Dovidio, PhD.

The new journal provides timely theoretical and empirical reviews of topics and research that contribute to understanding and addressing social issues and public policy. The journal aims to be accessible and relevant to a broad audience, and will explore how research and theory can inform social issues and policy, as well as articulate the implications of social issues and public policy for theory and research.

Div. 17 honors international psychologists

Div. 17 (Society of Counseling Psychology), the Council of Counseling Psychology Training Programs and the Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies honored six recipients of its 2008 Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of the Counseling Profession award.

This year the six honorees were selected from Europe and East Asia for their contributions to counseling, including cross-national collaboration. The awardees are Raoul Van Esbroeck, PhD, of Vrije University in Belgium; Jean Guichard, PhD, of the University of Paris in France; S. Alvin Leung, PhD, of the University of Hong Kong; Salvatore Soresi, PhD, of the University of Padua in Italy; Li-fei Wang, PhD, of the National Taiwan Normal University; and Kay Hyon Kim, PhD, of Seoul National University, Korea.

Div. 19 sponsors research and travel award

Div. 19 (Society for Military Psychology) is offering its annual Military Psychology Research and Travel Awards competition to recognize the contribution of students in the field of military psychology. The awards will be presented to students whose research reflects excellence in military psychology.

Nominate for Div. 46's News Media Recognition Award

The News Media Recognition Award for excellence in the reporting of psychological information and research is an annual award given to a journalist, reporter or producer from either print or broadcast media.

The recipient of the News Media Recognition Award will be announced at APA's 2008 Annual Convention in Boston, Aug. 14, 2008.

To nominate a journalist, reporter or producer with a track record of excellence reporting about psychology or mental health issues and policy, contact Elizabeth Carll, PhD, chair of the Div. 46 News Media, Public Education, Public Policy Committee at e-mail or (631) 754-2424. The deadline for nominations is May 15.

Div. 52 holds conference

Div. 52 (International) members Uwe P. Gielen, PhD, and Jennifer Lancaster, PhD, organized a conference on "Internationalizing the Psychology Curriculum," held at St. Francis College, New York in November 2006. President Michael J. Stevens, PhD, gave a keynote presentation on "Internationalizing the Psychology Curriculum: Let's Kick it up a Notch." The following program included historical and indigenous psychology perspectives, updates on various APA initiatives, long-distance instruction across cultural and national boundaries, evaluating psychology curricula in various countries, international challenges for instructors, roundtable and discussions about the challenges of internationalizing the curriculum in specific areas such as abnormal and developmental psychology as well as the psychology of women. Preparations for editing a volume on these and related topics are now under way.
