Attend free accreditation pre-convention workshops in Boston

The Commission on Accreditation (CoA) is offering free site-visitor training workshops prior to APA's 2008 Annual Convention in Boston, Aug. 14–17. CoA will conduct two full-day Doctoral and Internship/Postdoctoral Site Visitor Training Workshops on Aug.13. The workshops are open to new and experienced site visitors.

Participants receive 7.5 CE credits. CoA welcomes attendees from all areas of psychology, especially generalists, those from postdoctoral residency programs, women and members of underrepresented groups.

A free half-day Site Visitor Chair Workshop (for no CE credits) will be offered on the same day for those interested in learning how to chair a site-visit team. Current site visitors who are chair-eligible, based on participation in three or more visits, are encouraged to attend.

APA president honors three with presidential citations

APA President Alan E. Kazdin, PhD, has recognized three individuals for working to improve the lives of others through their contributions to the field of psychology.

At the APA Summit on Violence and Abuse in Relationships on Feb. 28-29 in Bethesda, Md., Kazdin honored Jacquelyn W. White, PhD, and Robert Geffner, PhD.

White was lauded for her contributions to research and teaching and her advocacy on behalf of girls and women who have suffered sexual violence. Her efforts increased the nation's understanding of gender and aggression and bettered the lives of adolescent girls and adult women. She is president of Div. 35 (Society for the Psychology of Women) and is associate editor for Aggressive Behavior.

Kazdin recognized Geffner for his efforts to train psychologists in the areas of trauma and aggression as well as his research on crime patterns among youth and adult men. Geffner founded the Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma and the Family Violence and Sexual Assault Institute at Alliant International University in California, both of which have contributed enormously to enhancing the skills of psychologists and other practitioners in the field. Geffner is president of Div. 56 (Trauma).

At the Work, Stress and Health Conference on March 6-8 in Washington, D.C., Kazdin gave a Presidential Citation to John Howard, MD, director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in recognition of his support for research on preventing workplace stress-related illness and injury. He's also credited with fostering an enduring partnership between NIOSH and APA. Under Howard's leadership, the importance of work organization research has gained a strong foothold in NIOSH's research portfolio.
