Div. 18 trains prescribing psychologists

Div. 18 (Psychologists in Public Service) and Alliant International University are partnering to train 100 therapists to become prescribing psychologists. In doing so, they are meeting a critical health need, says Beth Rom-Rymer, PhD, who notes that upwards of 80 percent of mental health prescriptions are written by primary-care physicians who have minimal behavioral health training.

The program, which has already trained 25 psychologists, consists of 450 hours of classes on topics such as biochemistry, neuroscience and clinical medicine, in addition to pharmacology and psychopharmacology classes. Classes emphasize the integration of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy and the treatment issues with special populations. The training has been funded by Div. 18's own community of psychologists.

To learn more about the program, e-mail Randy Taylor, past president of Div. 18, or Steve Tulkin, at Alliant International University.
