Divisions unite anti-violence programming

During APA's Annual Convention, two APA divisions will host a programming track that joins 29 division-sponsored sessions and seven presidential programs on the topic of interpersonal violence. The track, "Thematic Programming on Interpersonal Violence: Connecting Agendas and Forging New Directions," is co-sponsored by Divs. 35 (Society for the Psychology of Women) and 56 (Trauma) and will cover topics such as adolescent dating violence, the conflict in Darfur and the Virginia Tech shootings. Divs. 35 and 56 initiated the track as a follow-up to February's Summit on Violence and Abuse in Relationships, part of APA President Alan E. Kazdin's initiative on interpersonal violence.

Other highlights include sessions on human trafficking, hate crimes and treating post-traumatic stress disorder in youth, as well as a poster session on violence against women.

The programming concludes with a town hall meeting where participants will discuss ways psychologists can unite research, practice and advocacy efforts to reduce interpersonal violence.

• On Aug. 13, CONA will co-sponsor the all-day preconvention continuing-education workshop, "What Psychologists Should Know about Working with Older Adults," to increase the competencies of psychologists interested in working with these clients. • CONA will also present its 2008 Award for the Advancement of Psychology and Aging, an annual award honoring an individual who has made significant contributions to its mission.

• CONA is also a co-sponsor of APA President Kazdin's Presidential Initiative Symposium, "Responding to the Challenges of Aging: Lessons from Medicine, Psychology, and Law."

CONA will host an anniversary celebration on the evening of Aug. 15.
