Candidates answer final questions:
Q5: What does diversity mean to you and how would you encourage diversity in APA?
I value the differences among people and want us to embrace the many dimensions of diversity as central to our association. Diversity includes ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, age, religion and scientists, practitioners and educators. We each have multiple identities. Valuing diversity means welcoming differing perspectives and contributions. APA can play important roles in educating members and the public about diversity and multicultural competency in psychological science, education and practice. I support APA's Diversity Implementation Plan, the diversity recommendations for APA's strategic plan, the dissemination of psychological knowledge to advance equal opportunity and enhanced ethnic-minority recruitment, retention and training. Our annual convention should be vibrant, affordable, scholarly and stimulating to our diverse APA membership. That's a tall order! I will recruit world-class speakers, support attendance of graduate students and early career professionals, offer family-friendly programming, showcase interdisciplinary and international work, encourage more business of practice programming and provide a welcome format for specialty interests (e.g., a convention within a convention). San Diego is a colorful, enjoyable city for our 2010 convention. Join with me and let's make the meeting an unforgettable experience for all who want to come, learn, network and grow.See more platform information at www.CarolGoodheartForAPAPresident.com. |
