Candidates answer final questions: Q5: What does diversity mean to you and how would you encourage diversity in APA? Diversity means inclusiveness. APA should demonstrate sensitivity to all APA members regardless of race, gender, primary language, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation or bodily integrity. As president, I would call for minority-run continuing-education workshops. I would encourage "two-way" exchanges between the minority and disability affairs offices of APA and APA's membership (not just a "newsletter"). Audio versions of select APA journals should be made available, and other barriers should be evaluated and addressed. Graduate schools will be encouraged to engage in culturally relevant research and to utilize minority consultants to share ideas and serve as role models for minority students.
As president I would appoint a committee to canvass members who never attend conventions in an effort to determine what would make conventions more attractive to them. I would also consult with persons with disabilities and diverse religious groups in planning conventions. I would make conventions more accessible to the public and the public more accessible to conventions. This will include evening programs for community members and outings for attendees to learn more about the community in which the convention is held. Finally, convention presentations must progress without disruption by activist groups wishing to force their agendas on others.
