Candidates answer final questions: Q5: What does diversity mean to you and how would you encourage diversity in APA? APA has made admirable progress in opening itself up to ethnic, racial, age- and gender-based forms of diversity. Unfortunately, APA's own governance lacks analogous diversity when we tend to see the same APA committee members, council members and divisional officers year after year, changing only their offices or divisions. We need to encourage the infusion of fresh voices and perspectives, thus cultivating a more diverse leadership. Similarly, the association's media tends to be restricted to leadership-dominant views. This must change; we must encourage free debate and welcome diverse opinions and experience into all areas of our governance structure.
Q6: What steps would you take to ensure the success of the Annual Convention during your presidential term? Currently, the convention is designed to permit the widest number of psychologists to present papers, leading to a disproportionate number of presenters to other attendees. Smaller conferences on specific areas of interest tend to be well-attended. We should encourage interested divisions to devote a portion of their programming to cutting-edge topic areas, explored in depth. This would create a collection of state-of-the-art miniconventions in various fields of psychology that few would want to miss. Also, rather than spending extraordinary amounts on superstars, we should support and better integrate the unique artistic and cultural offerings of each host city. www.reisnerforpresident.org
