Apply for 2009 travel grants to attend international conferences

APA's Office of International Affairs awards travel grants to offset conference registration fees at international psychology conferences. All APA and American Psychological Association of Graduate Students members are eligible to apply. Applications and requirements can be found at: www.apa.org/international/awards/travel.html. The travel grant deadlines are Dec. 15, March 1 and June 1. See www.apa.org/international/calendar.html for information on upcoming international conferences held in 2009.

Now accepting nominations for APA president

APA invites members to nominate their colleagues for APA's 2011 presidency. Nominations are limited to 50 words or less and must be sent by Jan. 15. Presidential candidates are also welcome to speak to APA's Council of Representatives meeting, Feb. 20–22.

Apply for a 2009 conference grant

APA's Board of Educational Affairs is awarding $5,000 in grants to support conferences that seek to enhance the quality of undergraduate education in psychology and to advance the teaching of psychology at the secondary, two-year and four-year levels.

The conference must be directed by an APA member, associate or affiliate to qualify for funding. The grant may be used to offset travel expenses, registration fees and speaker fees. Applications are due Feb. 23. For more information, visit www.apa.org/ed.

Earn CE credit online

Read the APA Monitor's monthly "Ethics Rounds" articles, answer a few questions, and you can earn continuing-education credit.

Each "Ethics Rounds" program contains six different articles and provides one CE credit. Issues covered include posting personal content on the Internet, multiple relationships, training ethical psychologists and gossiping about patients. After reading each article, you'll take a 12-item test and receive your credit instantly.

Nominate an outstanding local association

State, provincial and territorial psychological associations that have demonstrated excellence in promoting graduate student development and joint American Psychological Association of Graduate Students/State, Provincial and Territorial Psychological Associations membership are eligible for the Outstanding State, Provincial or Territorial Psychological Association of the Year Award and $1,500.

APA recognizes 10 outstanding young scientists

APA awarded prizes to 10 psychology students at the 2008 Intel Science and Engineering Fair. This year's competition, held at the Georgia World Congress Center, May 11–16, brought together 1,500 young scientists from 40 countries to compete for scholarships, tuition grants, internships and other awards.

The psychology award winners include:

• Reed Hurdle Falkner, Taylor Michael McGraw, and Bradley Douglas Shields of Oxford High School, Oxford, Miss., who won first place and $1,500 for their project "The Effect of Visually Enhanced Medicine Labels on Recall Ability."

• Vivian Alice Lee of Vista Ridge High School, Cedar Park, Texas, who won second place and $1,000 for her project "A Study of Varying Harmonic Spectrum Exposure on Students' Concentration during Spatial Reasoning Examination as Assessed via Fourier Analyses."

• Shelby Marie Raye of Manatee High School, Bradenton, Fla., "What's In and What's Out: High Schoolers' Perceptions of Coolness"; Kaleigh Anne Eichel of Strongsville Sr. High School, Strongsville, Ohio, "The Ability to Learn: Learning and Communication between Comet Goldfish"; Thomas McLean Burr of South Fork High School, Stuart, Fla., "The Devolution of Cooperation: An Examination of Excessive Noise in the Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma"; Emily Rose Summerbell of Collins Hill High School, Suwanee, Ga., "It's A Guy Thing: How Fathers Affect Daughters' Dating Habits"; Mary Alysandra Patzel and Jessica Rae Cummins of West Salem High School, Salem, Ore., "A Discussion About Equality: A Gender Study in the Classroom" won third-place and $500.

Notice of guidelines in progress

APA's Div. 40 (Clinical Neuropsychology) and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, in consultation with Div. 22 (Rehabilitation), have developed a joint statement on "Structure and Function of an Interdisciplinary Team for Persons with Acquired Brain Injury."

APA members are invited to review the statement and provide comments until Feb. 15. Once in final form, the statement will be reviewed for adoption as APA policy. To comment on the draft statement, go to http://forms.apa.org/about/division/asha-form.

Nominate for journal editors

APA's Publications and Communications (P&C) Board seeks nominations for the editorships of Developmental Psychology, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, and Psychological Review. Candidates should be APA members and available to start receiving manuscripts in early 2010. APA encourages participation by members of underrepresented groups in the publication process and would particularly welcome such nominees. Self-nominations are also encouraged.

Candidates should be nominated by accessing APA's EditorQuest site: http://editorquest.apa.org. On the Home menu on the left, find "Guests." Next, click on the link "Submit a Nomination," enter your nominee's information, and click "Submit."

Send statements of one page or less supporting a nominee to Emnet Tesfaye.

The deadline for nominations is Jan. 10.
