Universities—especially private schools—are giving out more "A"s than ever, according to a study of 180 institutions by Stuart Rojstaczer, PhD, who has been collecting the data for the last six years.
Preliminary data on community colleges, however, suggest they are largely immune from the trend—perhaps because the quality of students is lower or simply because they don't expect and demand high marks, he says.
"One thing is true in general: The more tuition you pay, the higher the average GPA," says Rojstaczer.
