Upfront

The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, better known as the economic stimulus package, gave $300 million to the National Health Service Corps, a division of the Department of Health and Human Services dedicated to providing primary health care, including behavioral and mental health services, to underserved populations.

Of that money, $200 million will fund a loan repayment program for new applicants and renewals, which psychologists can apply for. If psychologists participate in the program, NHSC will provide $50,000 toward repaying their loans in exchange for two years of service.

Nina G. Levitt, EdD, APA's associate executive director of government relations, predicts the funding could create 4,000 new loan repayment awards. For more information, visit http://nhsc.hrsa.gov.
