Over the last decade, the suicide rate among active-duty military has increased 71 percent, from 9.1 per 100,000 in 2001 to 15.6 per 100,000 in 2009. Almost as many American troops (at home and abroad) have committed suicide this year as have been killed in combat in Afghanistan.
