Psychology is gaining a place alongside reading, writing and ’rithmetic in America’s high schools. Perhaps it should be no surprise that a science that addresses topics such as romantic relationships, mental illness and race would be popular among teens. To wit:

  • Nearly one million students graduate high school every year having taken at least one psychology course.

  • There are 7,000 high school psychology teachers nationwide.

  • About 179,000 high school students took the Advanced Placement psychology examination in 2010 — nearly a 20 percent increase over the 2009 exam.
