Upfront
Psychology is gaining a place alongside reading, writing and ’rithmetic in America’s high schools. Perhaps it should be no surprise that a science that addresses topics such as romantic relationships, mental illness and race would be popular among teens. To wit:
Nearly one million students graduate high school every year having taken at least one psychology course.
There are 7,000 high school psychology teachers nationwide.
About 179,000 high school students took the Advanced Placement psychology examination in 2010 — nearly a 20 percent increase over the 2009 exam.
