Div. 38 (Health)
Div. 38 launched its newly redesigned Web site at www.health-psych.org on Feb. 1. Division members and nonmembers will find useful information about the division and about the field of health psychology. New features include an announcements board for job postings, a news section that provides the latest information in health psychology and highlights of articles published in the division's journal, Health Psychology. Students will find detailed information about programs offering doctoral, postdoctoral
and clinical psychology internship training.
In fall 1999, Div. 38's executive board appointed Lance S. Weinhardt, PhD, of the Medical College of Wisconsin, as the first Web editor. He guides the development of the new site and oversees all aspects of its operation. Please submit announcements, job listings, calls for papers, etc., to the editor at webeditor@health-psych.org, or by using the submission form available throughout the Web site.
Div. 38 also offers e-mail listservs: one for full members and one for students. More than 100 students have joined the listserv to discuss training issues, dissertation topics, professional prospects, division services and other topics. Students need not be division members to receive the listserv.
To receive either listserv, send a request to Barbara Keeton, Division 38 Administrative Officer, at apadiv38@erols.com.
Div. 50 (Addictions)
Div. 50 members are using the Web in a variety of ways to conduct academic and clinical activities and to study Internet-related problems:
* Neal A. Buchman, PhD, works for Kaiser Permanente Online, a members-only Web site for a large HMO. In a "virtual medical center" augmenting regular services, members have online conversations with other members and professional staff about health problems, treatment, resources and benefits. Buchman moderates discussions, including some on chemical dependency and monitors discussions for quality assurance.
* Eric Griffin-Shelley, PhD, and his colleagues are examining Internet problems, such as how online infidelity affects marital relationships. He has also completed work on computers, the Internet and sex addiction, to be presented at the 2000 National Conference of the National Council on Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity.
* Reid K. Hester, PhD, a staff writer for Self-Help & Psychology Magazine (www.shpm.com), has written online articles and assisted with an online question-and-answer section on alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Hester and his colleagues distribute treatment software for people with alcohol problems and also receive referrals for clinical work related to addictions and other problems through the Web site for Behavior Therapy Associates (www.behaviortherapy.com).
*
As an online psychology faculty
member at Capella University in
Minneapolis (www.capella.edu), Nancy
A. Piotrowski, PhD, also a
member of Div. 28 (Psychopharm-
acology and Substance Abuse) works in a virtual classroom. In classes such as substance-abuse therapies, students participate in online discussions and assignments. Some assignments take students into their communities for outreach and research. Piotrowski's virtual classroom consists of students from the United States and abroad, allowing for discussions of cultural and other regional differences important to addictive behavior.
