Notice of guidelines in progress
The position paper, "Cultural and Gender Awareness in International Psychology," is the result of the collective work of the members of the Div. 52 International Committee for Women and a special Div. 52 (International) Task Force. The paper underwent several revisions after input and circulation among psychologists from many countries at the APA Convention and at other international professional meetings. The goal of this position paper is to encourage psychologists to become aware of and act differently from the historical processes of global imperialism and colonialism by committing to five principles that help us understand and overcome oppressive attitudes and practices in dominant psychology transported internationally.
During 2001 to 2002, the
position paper was endorsed by the executive committees of Div. 52,
Div. 35 (Society for the Psychology
of Women), Div. 12 (Society of Clinical Psychology), Div. 17 (Counseling) and Div. 9 (Society
for the Psychological Study of
Social Issues). The APA Committee for International Relations in Psychology also endorsed the posi-
tion paper.
APA Association Rule 100-1.5 mandates notification of all divisions and state and provincial psychological associations of guidelines in progress prior to consideration by the Council of Representatives. APA members are also invited to request a copy of the document and to offer comment. This 90-day period for receipt of comments will end on July 9. After comments have been received and reviewed and appropriate revisions made, the guidelines will be reviewed by APA governance. The draft guidelines are available on the Internet at www.tamu-commerce.edu/orgs/div52. Receive a paper copy by contacting the Div. 52 Central Office at the APA address; (202) 336-6022 or via e-mail.
