In January, APA Executive Director for Public Interest Henry Tomes, PhD, announced that he would step down at the end of this year. Tomes came to APA in 1991 as the directorate's first full-time executive director. During his tenure, the directorate more than doubled its staff and attracted millions of dollars in grant funds from public and private agencies to generate and apply psychological knowledge on issues ranging from violence prevention to health disparities. He has supervised a staff that supported governance groups on aging, AIDS, women's issues, children and families, people with disabilities, ethnic-minority issues and gay, lesbian and bisexual concerns. He also oversaw APA's Minority Fellowship Program and Public Interest Public Policy Office.
