APA to investigate course design Print version: page 25 APA’s Education Directorate is teaming up with organizations such as the American Sociological Association, the American Chemical Society and the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) to rethink undergraduate introductory psychology courses. The organizations are seeking a grant-maker to infuse the overarching learning goals of liberal education into introductory courses. The ultimate aim, says Robin J. Hailstorks, PhD, associate executive director of APA’s Education Directorate, is to make psychology’s lessons valuable to students who never take another psychology class, as well as those that go on to major in the discipline. “In introductory psychology courses, we want students to develop the critical-thinking skills that are needed to begin scientific investigations about behavior and mental processes,” says Hailstorks. —S.
