Div. 1 (General)

Div. 1 has introduced three new awards to recognize outstanding achievements in general psychology. The Ernest R. Hilgard Award recognizes a lifetime contribution to general psychology; the George A. Miller Award honors an outstanding recent article in general psychology; and the Gardner Lindzey Award recognizes an outstanding recent doctoral dissertation in general psychology.

Melvin Marks, a retired professor of psychology at the University of Missouri, was presented with the 1997 Hilgard Award for his contributions to the literature on theories and systems of psychology.

This year, there were two winners of the Miller award. Judith Harris, author of several developmental psychology textbooks, won a Miller award for her article 'Where is the child?s socialization?: a group socialization theory of development' (Psychological Review, 1995). Dean Keith Simonton, professor of psychology at the University of California?Davis, also won the award for his article 'Creative productivity: a predictive and explanatory model of career trajectories and landmarks,' (Psychological Review, 1997). No candidate has been selected for the Lindzey Award.

Div. 1 also continues to support the William James Book Award, which was presented this year to Daniel L. Schacter for his book, 'Searching for Memory,' (New York: Basic Books, 1996) and to Jill G. Morawski for her book, 'Practicing Feminism: Reconstructing Psychotherapy' (University of Michigan Press, 1994).

Each award includes a plaque or certificate. The Hilgard, Miller and Lindzey awards include a check for $500, and the William James Book Award includes a check for $1,000.

The division encourages nominations for the 1998 award winners. To nominate colleagues for the Hilgard, Lindzey and Miller awards, submit the candidate?s name and vitae, a statement of support and letters of recommendation. Self-nominations are encouraged. For the Lindzey and Miller awards, nominations should include four copies of the article or dissertation being considered.

Nominations for the William James Award should include three copies of the book, a one-page statement of support and the author?s curriculum vitae. All nominators should state which award their submissions match.
