APF Awards COGDOP Graduate Student Scholarships

The American Psychological Foundation (APF), with the Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology (COGDOP), recently gave $13,000 in scholarships to support graduate students in their study of psychology. The scholarships included the first ever $3,000 Ruth and Joseph Matarazzo Scholarship, given to Kurtis L. Noblett, a graduate student working on his doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Wisconsin?Milwaukee. The Ruth and Joseph Matarazzo Scholarship was established to reward the most outstanding COGDOP applicant.

Noblett is using the scholarship to offset the costs associated with his research. He is studying the neurochemical and behavioral changes associated with antipsychotic treatments for schizophrenia and will compare two promising antipsychotic drugs with two traditional antipsychotic medications. The results of this study may allow researchers to predict promising properties of novel antipsychotic drugs prior to their transition to clinical trials.

APF gave 10 additional $1,000 scholarships to psychology graduate students who showed merit and evidence of need. Each graduate department of psychology that is a member in good standing of COGDOP was invited to nominate one candidate for a research scholarship. Students can use the scholarships for books, supplies, scientific research or travel to a scientific meeting.

The winners of the 1997 COGDOP graduate student scholarships were: E. Darcy Burgund, University of Minnesota; Suzanne L. Davis, University of Illinois?Chicago; Patricia Graczyk, Northern Illinois University; Robert D. Gray, York University; Judith M. Horowitz, State University of New York?Buffalo; Joseph M. Melcher, University of Pittsburgh; Punyashloke Mishra, University of Illinois?Urbana; Linda Monaco, University of Florida; Kathy B. Sigda, University of North Carolina?Chapel Hill; Heidi Verhoef, Boston College.

Harlene Hayne Wins APF Robert L. Fantz Award

The American Psychological Foundation (APF) gave the 1997 Robert L. Fantz Award to developmental psychologist Harlene Hayne, PhD, of the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. Hayne can use the $2,000 award for equipment purchases, travel, computer resources or other work-related costs.

APA?s Committee on Scientific Awards cites Hayne as having an 'enviable record of professional achievement for such a young investigator and is internationally recognized as a leading researcher in early cognitive development.' Her contributions to the cognitive development field have been 'influential,' and her work is 'cited in many introductory psychology and child development texts,' the committee added.

Hayne?s research interests include the development of attention, learning and memory in infants and young children. She and her students are currently examining the role that language development plays in memory development, and the implications of memory development for interviews with children in clinical and legal contexts.

Recently, she developed a new deferred imitation procedure for studying the long-term memory of infants and children ages 6 months to 24 months. Researchers demonstrate a series of actions using a hand puppet, and even the youngest infants imitate these actions without prodding by the experimenter. Studies using the new procedure show that infants as young as 6 months remember the series of actions up to 24 hours later. This evidence challenges current theories of the hierarchical development of multiple memory systems.

Hayne is a senior lecturer in the psychology department at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. She earned her doctorate in psychology at Rutgers University in 1988, and her bachelor?s degree in psychology at the Colorado College in 1983.

Robert L. Fantz, PhD, gave APF a bequest in 1983 to encourage and support the careers of promising young psychologists. He stipulated that the candidate?s work must cover basic scientific research or scholarly writing on perceptual-cognitive development, the development of selective attention or the development of individuality, creativity and free choice of behavior.

APF Awards Grants to Study Gay and Lesbian Issues

The American Psychological Foundation (APF) chose Kim Bartholomew, PhD, and the research team of Ewa Golebiowska, PhD, and Cynthia J. Thomsen, PhD, to receive the 1997 Wayne F. Placek grants.

Bartholomew, an associate professor at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, was awarded $22,927 for her proposal, 'Abuse in gay intimate relationships: an attachment perspective.' She will base her work on postdoctorate studies she conducted that tested models of adult attachment. In her research, she found high stability in some relationships with significant levels of abuse. Intrigued, she began studying 'the perpetration of intimate abuse and the difficulty many abused individuals experience in leaving abusive partners,' Bartholomew says.

She will use the methodology she has developed in earlier research to study abuse in gay relationships. 'To date, there is no reliable data on the prevalence of abuse in gay relationships and very little data on psychological factors associated with abuse in gay relationships,' Bartholomew says. 'I am hopeful that this research will make a substantial contribution to our understanding of gay men?s experiences of abuse in their intimate relationships.'

APF awarded Golebiowska and Thomsen $25,000 for their proposal, 'Dynamics of attitudes toward openly gay and lesbian political candidates.' The researchers will study the conditions under which gays and lesbians running for office will be more or less successful in their quests. Their research will draw from political science and psychological research, investigating variables such as the timing or certainty of a political candidate?s sexual orientation disclosure and the effect on the public of a candidate?s consistency or inconsistency with gay and lesbian stereotypes.

Thomsen and Golebiowska believe that their research will have a practical application. 'The findings of the project should be of interest to openly gay and lesbian candidates and their promoters,' Golebiowska says.

Golebiowska is assistant professor of political science at Tufts University. She received her doctorate from the Ohio State University in 1992 and much of her postgraduate work has involved studying stereotypes in politics. Thomsen is the project director for a multimillion-dollar Navy-sponsored research project investigating the predictors, correlates and consequences of sexual assault and asexual victimization. She received her doctorate in experimental social psychology from the University of Minnesota, and her post-graduate research interests include studying attitude structure and function; social categorization and social identification; and political cognition and behavior.

The Placek grants are for activities that will increase the general public?s understanding of gay men and lesbians and reduce the stress experienced by those people. The fund was established by Wayne F. Placek, PhD, who participated in Evelyn Hooker?s groundbreaking study in the 1950s, which determined that homosexuality was not attributable to pathology. Placek left Hooker $550,000, which Hooker subsequently gave to the Foundation.
