VOLUME 29 , NUMBER 8 -August 1998 Preparing psychology?s future scientistsThirty-two of the nation?s top undergraduate psychology students attended the fourth Summer Science Institute sponsored by APA?s Science Directorate. The institute presents scientific psychology to exceptional undergraduate students in hopes of generating the field?s future leaders. The program was held at Johns Hopkins University June 14?22. APA?s Executive Director for Science Richard McCarty, PhD, led the institute, and APA President Martin E.P. Seligman presented the keynote address. The students attended lectures presented by some of psychology?s top researchers, including Thomas Kamarck, PhD, a professor of psychology at the University of Pittsburgh and Judy DeLoache, PhD, a professor of psychology at the University of Illinois. To gain research experience, the students visited the laboratories of eight Johns Hopkins? psychology faculty members, and tackled projects such as testing the spatial memory of rats and investigating the mechanisms of word and sentence production.
