APA was founded in 1892, but it wasn't until 1946 that the association grew to such a size that a chief executive officer (CEO) was needed to manage its day-to-day functions. Before then, the business of the association was run by the secretary-treasurer out of his or her personal office. APA's former CEOs and the years they served are:
Dael Wolfle, 1946-50
Fillmore H. Sanford, 1950-56
Roger W. Russell, 1956-59
John G. Darley, 1959-62
Arthur Brayfield, 1962-68
Kenneth Little, 1969-75
Charles Kiesler, 1975-79*
Michael Pallak, 1979-85
Leonard Goodstein, 1985-88
Raymond D. Fowler, 1989-2002
* Dr. Kiesler died on Oct. 11. See Former CEO Kiesler died.
