APA was founded in 1892, but it wasn't until 1946 that the association grew to such a size that a chief executive officer (CEO) was needed to manage its day-to-day functions. Before then, the business of the association was run by the secretary-treasurer out of his or her personal office. APA's former CEOs and the years they served are:

  • Dael Wolfle, 1946-50

  • Fillmore H. Sanford, 1950-56

  • Roger W. Russell, 1956-59

  • John G. Darley, 1959-62

  • Arthur Brayfield, 1962-68

  • Kenneth Little, 1969-75

  • Charles Kiesler, 1975-79*

  • Michael Pallak, 1979-85

  • Leonard Goodstein, 1985-88

  • Raymond D. Fowler, 1989-2002
