Grants available to study creativity, optimism and other virtues
Print version: page 10
Need funding for your research? The Positive Psychology Network (PPN), directed by APA's 1998 President Martin E.P. Seligman, PhD, offers two types of research grants for investigators interested in positive psychology, which seeks to understand and promote the strengths that enable individuals and communities to thrive.
The two grant programs are:
* The Templeton Positive Psychology Young Scholars Grants program, which offers 10 grants of up to $10,000 to support early-career psychologists as they develop innovative lines of research in positive psychology. Candidates can be from any country or social science, and there is no age limit. The application deadline is Dec. 31. PPN encourages proposals on such topics as optimistic thinking, noble purpose, self-control, religious belief, genius, positive emotions, spirituality and health, future-mindedness, and self-directed character-building.
* The Values-In-Action (VIA) Strengths and Virtues Grants program, which provides seed grants of up to $10,000 each to support empirical research on one or more of the 24 VIA Classification of Strengths, listed at www.positivepsychology.org/strengthsgrants.htm. The grants cover only direct research costs and not the salaries of the principal investigators. Applications are accepted on a continuing basis, and anyone is eligible.
Details on applying for each type of grant can be found at www.positivepsychology.org. Send applications and recommendations by e-mail to Peter Schulman at schulman@psych.upenn.edu or mail them to his attention at the University of Pennsylvania, Department of Psychology, 3815 Walnut St., Philadelphia, PA 19104-6196.
