APA's Div. 9 (Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, SPSSI) has appointed Karen Chen, PhD, the division's new SPSSI Scholar in the APA Public Policy Office.
As the SPSSI Scholar, Chen will work with the APA's policy staff on various policy activities, including health disparities, HIV/AIDS, hate crimes and high-stakes testing.
Chen--whose primary interests are group disparities, underserved populations and immigration--recently completed her doctorate in social psychology at the University of Michigan. Her dissertation examined the role of social identity on performance of a positively stereotyped task.
She has served as director of the Midwest Asian American Students Union and spent two summers as a research assistant at the Urban Institute in Washington, D.C. Chen has won numerous awards, including the APA Minority Research Fellowship.
